Hold On (I’m Coming)

Now don't you ever be sad,

Lean on me when times are bad

When the day comes and you're in doubt,

In a river of trouble, about to drown.

Hold on, I'm coming.

I'm on my way, your lover –

When you get cold I'll be your cover

Don't have to worry because I'm here.

Don't need to suffer because I'm here.

Reach out to me for satisfaction.

Call my name for a quick reaction.

When Love Comes To Town

I was a sailor, I was lost at sea

I was under the waves before love rescued me

I was a fighter I could turn on thread

Now I stand accused of things I've said.

When Love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train

When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame.

Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down,

But I did what I did before love came to town.

Used to make love under the red sunset,

I was making promises I was soon to forget.

She was pale as the lace of her wedding gown,

But I left her standing before love came to town.

Ran into a juke joint when I heard a guitar scream

The notes were turning blue, I was dazing in a dream

As the music played I saw my life turn around

That was the day before love came to town.

I was there when they crucified my lord

I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword

I threw the dice when they pierced his side,

But I've seen love conquer the great divide.

1000 Miles

I look back to the day I first turned away

(Oh, the memory is all to clear)

I traded what I held dear for a minute that's gone.

I can't hide my crime, I can't turn back time

I'm gonna reap the seeds I've sown

so I'm waiting here out on my own for it all to fall down

and it feels like, yeah it feels like

you're a thousand miles away.

I could raise my hands or hide my head in the sand

but I'm never gonna get away -

I know much too much to say "The Devil made me do it!"

So I close my eyes and I breathe a sigh

Don't know what to say or to feel

I start to kneel and try my best to pray.

Even though it feels like, yeah it feels like

you're a thousand miles away.

And it feels like, yeah, it feels like

you're a thousand miles away.

But I need you – it feels like, yeah it feels like

you're a thousand miles away.

I can’t wait any longer - it feels like, yeah it feels like

you're a thousand miles

A thousand miles

A million miles away.

Longing

Visions of the promised land,

mansions in the sky

Me, I'm just an earthly man

with Heaven in his eyes.

A wish away from eternity,

a tear from paradise,

and a lifetime to work through it all -

wouldn't it be nice...

If we could have it all right now

Hold it in our hands right now

Longing, longing

The mirror tells a different tale –

it doesn't matter what I believe

`cause truth is more than the images

I have chosen to perceive.

When my world comes tumbling down

in an avalanche of pride

I wonder about a year from now -

I think I'm in for quite a ride...

To Be A Friend

If I cling to you will you run away?

What will you do when I'm in need?

Will you turn back because you're too busy?

Will you forget my name and my face

when I'm dead and gone?

Oh, I know what you say –

you say that you care -

but your words fall short of shallow.

When I long for you to listen

I feel the rejection;

it leaves me wondering –

What does it mean to be a friend?

If I said to you I was your friend

I would be there as often as I can,

I would listen and try to heal your hurt

and if all is well I'd be happy with you.

Inner City Blues

Rockets, moon shots,

Spend it on the have-nots

Money, we make it,

Before we see it, you take it

Oh, make me wanna holler,

the way they do my life

Yeah, make me wanna holler,

the way they do my life

‘Cause this ain’t livin’

Inflation, no chance

to increase finance

Bills pile up sky-high,

send that boy off to die

Hangups, letdowns,

bad breaks, setbacks

Natural fact is

I can't pay my taxes

Crime is increasing,

trigger-happy policing

Panic is spreading,

God knows where we're heading.

Blue Lincoln

Driving home in a quickly shrinking world

and I’m far too tired for thinking;

there’s a man in a blue Lincoln up ahead.

His hair’s the color of the winter sky

and he’d be surprised if he caught my eye

staring back, a distant son’s reply

that says, “I meant what I said.”

Yeah, I meant every word —

How you gonna live if you don’t feel nothin’?

How you gonna love if you keep on running away?

How you gonna live if you don’t feel nothin’?

How you gonna love if you keep on running away?

Oh, I’m just waiting for the light to change…

And it’s another day for me, another dollar

Like Marvin Gaye, “it makes me wanna holler

the way they do my life”

like a dog in a collar or a priest.

Wanting more than a blood relation,

storylines, and manipulation —

I’m holding on to my reservations

as they slowly increase

and what I like about `em least is —

How’m I gonna live if I don’t feel nothin’?

How’m gonna love if I keep on running away?

How’m I gonna live if I don’t feel nothin’?

How’m gonna love if I keep on running away?

Oh, I’m still waiting for the light to change…

We’re on the same road —

I can tell by the tail-lights

burning a hole in the gathering night

as he’s pulling away…

Come on, come on —

who’s your daddy?

Come on, come on —

where’s he going?

Come on, come on —

pull yourself together boy

Come on, come on —

there’s no way of knowing.

Come on home…

Come on home.

Say A Prayer

Here - where the fire never fades

I watch a promise turn to embers;

The smell of desperation and a tear

That hisses on the cinders.

I wish I could have helped.

If anyone remembers, say a prayer.

Etched on ruins, a silent testament.

One finger painting in the sand

For generations to consider

And build on once again.

Until the sea-wash comes it will stand.

Hand locked in hand, say a prayer.

Looking through a wind-blown tree

I see a nest begin to loosen.

Fearing for her children, she flies

In vain to remove them.

Have they so soon learned to fly?

What happened to them?

Wings beat the air…please say a prayer.

Pray the wind, the water, and the fire

to go unto its own, and not return.

Pray time to turn no more. Pray life to never end.

Say a prayer.

Quick Fix

When I skinned my knee Momma made me feel better

but the wound still needed time to heal

When Betty broke my heart you know I wanted to die

somehow I survived that long ordeal

Heartache to heartache I grew strong

learning to take whatever comes along and now

I don't want a quick fix,

No, no, no, I don't need a quick fix.

I went to Sunday School, I heard the Golden Rule

from folks who fought over chairs and padded pews

When my friend got fired he made their prayer list

but they kept their cash - he didn't share their views

I grew disillusioned but I held on

`cause there's no confusion between right and wrong

(And I think that's wrong)

Some talk of pie in the sky in the sweet bye and bye

Well, I believe in a place called Heaven

No tears, no fears, no sin, no dyin'

but in the meantime I've got to keep on livin'

through laughter and sorrow, sun and rain

sharing the Savior's great love and pain – OW!

Last To Believe

There's some talk going around

By now it's probably all over town

They say you dug yourself into one deep hole

I didn't stay to hear it all

But I knew I just had to call you up and

see if I could help to ease your soul

Because there's too little justice

in a world of blinding lies

And there's even less mercy found among condemning eyes

I'd rather be the last to believe the truth

than to be the first guy to buy a lie about you

I'd rather be the last to believe the truth about you.

Maybe you leaned out a bit too far

caught your hand in the cookie jar

You know it doesn't really matter much in my view

`Cause I'm your friend from way back when

I'm here now and I'll be here again even

after all the rest have sentenced you.

Into The Light

I looked into the light but it only burned my mind.

The changes in my heart had to come in time.

I saw a starving man, he was begging for some food.

He frightened me at first, but then I did what I could.

But there’s so many hungry people

I don’t think I’ll ever help them all

And that bothers me a little –-

I’m sure it must have bothered Paul a lot.

You can’t take it with you,

but you can send it on ahead.

What good is it to you right here after you are dead?

I looked into the light but it only burned my mind.

The changes in my heart –

Well, they’re happening all the time.

One

Is it getting better or do you feel the same?

Will it make easier on you now

Now that you’ve got someone to blame?

You say “one love, one life”

when it's one need in the night

One love – we get to share it,

But it leaves you baby if you don’t care for it

Did I disappoint you or leave a bad taste in your mouth?

You act like you never had love,

now you want me to go without.

Well, it’s too late tonight

to drag the past out into the light

We’re one, but we’re not the same,

we get to carry each other, carry each other, one…

Have you come here for forgiveness?

Have you come to raise the dead?

Have you come here to play Jesus to the lepers in your head?

Did I ask too much? More than a lot?

You gave me nothing, now it’s all I got

We’re one, but we’re not the same,

Well, we hurt each other then we do it again

You say, “Love is a temple, love a higher law,

Love is a temple, love a higher law.”

You ask me to enter, but then you make me crawl

and I can’t keep holding on to what you got when all you’ve got is hurt

One love, one blood, one life –

you’ve got to do what you should

One life with each other - sisters, brothers

One life, but we’re not the same,

we get to carry each other, carry each other, one…

Gimme Shelter

Ooh, a storm is threatening my very life today

If I don't get some shelter, oh yeah I'm gonna fade away

War, children,

it's just a shot away, it's just a shot away

War, children,

it's just a shot away, it's just a shot away

Ooh, see the fire is sweepin, our very streets today

Burns like a red coal carpet, mad bull lost its way

Mmm, the flood is threatening my very life today

Gimme, gimme shelter, or I'm gonna fade away

War, children,

it's just a shot away, it's just a shot away

it's just a shot away, it's just a shot away

It's just a thought away, it's just a shot away

I said, love, sister,

it's just a kiss away, it's just a kiss away

It's just a kiss away, it's just a kiss away,

kiss away, kiss away, yeah

All Along The Watchtower

"There must be some way outta here"

Said the joker to the thief

There's too much confusion

I can't get no relief

Businessmen, they drink my wine

Plowmen dig my earth

None of them along the line

Know what any of it is worth

No reason to get excited

The thief he kindly spoke

There are many here among us

Who feel that life is but a joke

But you and I, we've been through that

And this is not our fate

So let us not talk falsely now

Because the hour's getting late

All along the watchtower

Princes kept the view

While all the women came and went

Bare-foot servants too

Outside in the cold distance

A wildcat did growl

Two riders were approaching

The wind begin to howl

All along the watchtower...

All along the watchtower...
